Iowa Avenue

I just posed this question(s) on my blog and thought I would also ask it here.

What do you need to lose weight?

If you are still struggling to lose weight or have already lost it and are trying to maintain it, what do you think it will take? Is it a program or a special workout? Is it motivation and inspiration? Or is it something that you just can't obtain through the internet?

I know what has worked for me, but that might not work for anyone else. So what are your thoughts?

My own opinion is that until a person has made a solid commitment to losing weight, no tools in the world will help.

But, once they make that decision, a plan to get from here to there is necessary. That plan could include a program, a support group, exercise routine, motivational music, or anything that keeps a person moving forward.

Good question--for me, since I love to work out, and exercise, it's simply a matter of time and not being under too many work pressures which limit my ability to do so.

No program, social network, group forum, diet program will work if the commitment isn't there, as you said Lisa. We have to be able to do this for ourselves and by ourselves this way we are not relying on any one person, place, or thing. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that having a support system and guidelines are important, but I become concerned when Jane wont go to the gym because her friend Cindy wants to stay home or when one chooses to "cheat" on a diet plan simply because their support system did or said something.

Commitment, self determination, motivation to live a healthy lifestyle. I'm with you David, time is usually the only thing keeps me from exercising but still I find ways to stay active with the kids, if not at the gym.

I agree, it takes commitment and motivation on the part of the person who wants to lose weight and then you must have a plan with daily commitment to your plan. It is not an easy road to travel but I have found social support definitely does help to keep your eyes on the prize.

Well in the past I've lost 60+ lbs. I have since found out the hard way that the keeping it off is the hardest part... I need to stop enjoying wine so much and stop "eating after I eat"

It boils down to determination and dedication. If you have none, your weight loss journey will end up quickly and you'll be back sitting on your couch.

JJ

Commitment: weight loss has to be a priority in your life; sacrifices have to be made, but I have never once heard someone who lost weight say that it was not worth it.

Accountability: there is no one but you who puts food in your mouth or gets your butt in the gym. Once a person realizes this, they have really turned a corner in changing their life. Whining about temptation and busy schedules is just another way to push off responsibility.
