Old Man's Blurts

Blurt: Homemade Salt Substitute Recipe

One of the main things I try to avoid in my diet is adding additional salt. High salt intake has been linked to many health problems including obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), heart problems, cancer, osteoporosis, Ménière’s disease, asthma, and kidney disease.  I use pepper and other spices to add flavor to my meals. Here is an easy and [...]

Blurt: Healthy Cranberry Sauce Recipe

In our efforts to achieve a happier and healthier lifestyle it is important for us to plan for our success. About Me:
Hi. I’m Brian, the old man. They call me the old man not because I’m that old, but because I usually spend all my time with a younger crowd. I am 49, divorced, and have two wonderful children, a son and a daughter. I live on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I have BBA degree from Georgia State University. I have taken graduate courses in Religious Education from Loyola University and in Secondary Education from Jones International University. I am a columnist for a local newspaper. My positions have included Vice President of Operations, Consultant, Distribution Manager, District Manager, Area Manager, and Shift Manager. When I was healthy, I was active in the community as a Soccer Coach, Religious Education Teacher, Choir Member, Zoo Volunteer, and numerous leadership positions with the Boy Scouts of America.

I have been through many hard times. I have limited mobility due to a combination of things. I have congestive heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and arthritis in my knees and one hip. My health has been improving. Two years ago I was bed ridden. In February, I almost died. Today, I am able to get out of the house without my wheelchair and walk short distances and I have lost over 100 pounds. I will continue to update my progress. I hope this blog inspires you. It is my hope to shine my light upon the world. Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain. I think I read that in a fortune cookie once. I hope you enjoy my articles and share them with your friends. God Bless You.

What are your goals?
I have made a lifestyle change. I hope to shine my light on the world and inspire others to live a happier and healthier lifestyle.
What is your current exercise routine?
In the morning I go out on my balcony and do my physical therapy exercises alternating between upper and lower body each day. In the evenings, I like to walk. I begin by stretching my legs and then walk to the end of the street. This is an achievement for me because I was in a wheelchair not that long ago.
What diets have you tried?
I am currently on Weight Watchers and it is working for me. I have used it in the past but did not commit myself to a lifestyle change. I have used Nutri-Systems, SlimFast, MediFast, Atkins, South Beach, my Tuna Fish diet, and several others.
What things do you want to do before you die?
I recently accepted a position as a columnist for a local newspaper. I hope to write a novel and become a motivational speaker.
