Are you too old to exercise?

A Swedish study followed 2,205 men for over 20 years looking at age and exercise. The study found death rates to be highest among men who were sedentary at the start of the study and lowest for the most active men. Interestingly, men who began an exercise program at age 50 had decreased the risk of death after 10 years of being active to the level of those who had always been active.

Let’s see if I can say that another way. . .if you have been sedentary all your life and begin a… Continue

Hidden Caffeine in Diet Supplements

Not too long ago I posted on weight loss supplements and the fraudulent (and potentially dangerous) claims being made. I came across more information I’d like to share with you.

The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) analyzed over 50 dietary supplements and found approximately half contained the caffeine equivalent of 2 cups of coffee. Dietary supplements are not required to list caffeine content unless pure caffeine has been add… Continue

Does garlic lower blood pressure?

There are numerous health claims surrounding garlic. . .do you think they're true? Let's discuss garlic's relationship to blood pressure.

Research studies have found a link between the right type and amount of garlic and a lower blood pressure. The average reduction in systolic (top number) blood pressure was ~5-8 mm Hg. Garlic is linked to a reduction in diastolic blood pressure, but the decrease isn't large enough to be statistica… Continue

Do you ignore food recalls?

Rutgers University surveyed over 1,000 individuals and 60% reported searching their homes for potentially contaminated products when they learn about a food recall. Survey results show that 40% believe “It’s can’t happen to me” and do not take precautions.

Here are some of the interesting survey statistics:

64% pay attention to food-safety news
81% spread the word about food recalls/problems
25% throw out possibly contaminated food
12% eat food the think may be recalled

Where do you fall?

Do You Need to Eat Fat to Lose Fat?

When it's time to lose weight, many of us are trained to think "cut back on fat". In a previous post - What's the right amount of fat? - I discussed fat soluble vitamins, how much fat you should include in your daily diet, and some healthy fat sources. Now I want to cover one other important contribution fat makes when it comes to losing weight.

One of the beauties of fat is that it helps us to feel full. Fat i… Continue

Thank you!

I am guessing you stayed in Gardiner (or maybe West Yellowstone) and if so I am familiar with the pizza place. . . .didn't know they offered a sauerkraut pizza though. I will take your word for it that it was good:)

We have been in Yellowstone 2 years this summer. Do you remember all the "wildlife jams" when you were visiting. Well, they have started up full force this spring with the bears coming out of hibernation. For a local, the parking in the middle of the road gets old fast! Guess the beauty of the scenery all year should out way the tourist irritation. . . .I'll have to remind myself of that when I head to Cooke City tomorrow.

Wow, you live in Yellowstone? I've been there twice and would love to go again. It's a fantastic place. The last time I was there, my daughters and I stayed in a small town in Montana close to the park. The first night, we decided to have pizza for dinner and found a Mom and Pop pizza parlor. They offered sauerkraut on the pizza, and as we had never heard of it, but loved sauerkraut, we asked if we could add a couple of pieces to our order.

Talk about great. The next night, we went back and one half of one of our pizzas now featured sauerkraut. Knowing a good thing when we saw it, we went back for our last night there and by then, ordered one whole pizza with sauerkraut.

When we got home, we made it there, too. I had never seen sauerkraut offered before or sense, but it's the best pizza I've ever tasted.

Okay, now after that long winded store, Welcome to Iowa Avenue..................:)
