In Japan, McDonalds is experimenting with a new technique in marketing: "No-branding". Essentially they are removing the ubiquitous Golden Arches and scary clown face brand to see if people will be more or less inclined to eat at "Quarter Pounder shops" than at a traditional McDonalds.
What has been the reaction so far? This article points out that folks are li… Continue
I hate to say that this is one of those classic, "So um I haven't posted in a while, but here goes" posts, but well, it is.
Good. Got that off my chest, so now I am free to complain about something else. I seem to be whining and complaining a lot, but my readership over on Almost Fit actually spiked by 140 new subscribers in a single day, so I must be doing something right.
Unfortunately, what I am not doing right, is breaking through my plateau weight-wi… Continue
I posted an article on Almost Fit today on the benefits of eating together as a family. I wanted to give Iowa Avenue folks a little additional personal info, and ask you: What is your family eating culture like?
Here's a little history, and our current practice:
Growing up… Continue
I spent the day today mowing our yard. This may sound trivial if you have not seen our yard. I was mowing for almost 8 hours - we are on an acre, and due to some semi-sadistic character flaw that I have since gotten treatment for, I apparently thought it was a good idea to use mowing my lawn as exercise, so I purchased a lawnmower. Now it is self-propelled to a degree, but it really only propels itself when the bag is 90% empty. And when you don't mow your back 1/2 acre for like, a month, or two… Continue
I think most folks have seen this, but it is one of my favorite stress relieving videos on YouTube. Even funnier? He is serious - and laughing. I used to live in the Pasadena area, and he has a Yoga studio on Lake Ave. in Pasadena.
If you haven't seen it already - enjoy.

I did an interesting little experiment yesterday on Almost Fit. Well, in truth it was more of a "fix up" after I rethought my original post on quitting fast food. The first version was just too long, and after seeing it delivered to my inbox (yes, I admit it - I am on my own blog's mailing list), I realized nobody in their right mind would read the whole thing.
So, after thinking it over, I decided to revise history.
I broke the article in half and reposted it as two pieces last night, with a… Continue
I may write a post about this on Almost Fit, but I just couldn't wait...Essentially I have started to exercise regularly. I say started meaning that I've been walking a few times a week for a couple of weeks now, and I can tell that it is getting under my skin. I am actually looking forward to it now, which is an awesome mental shift for me.
A few things have changed very dramatically in my life recently. Not the least of which is I've quit my job to pursue personal projects. AND, that means -… Continue
Have you ever wondered why it seems that the French can get away with eating everything we’re told not to eat, and still live 3 years longer on average, without exercising more than we do, taking 6 week vacations, and 2 hour lunches?
I’ve written a guest post this morning for the good guys over at GetFitSlowly.com. In an article yesterday, I mentioned their site briefly as one of my inspirations for Almost Fit, so it was really exciting when J.D. agree… Continue
Today's post on Almost Fit is an introduction to my family's new experiment: We've started our own organic garden. It's been a project that we've wanted to try for some time now, so this year we finally made it happen.
My reasons for this are important: a) we'll eat better, and within a budget, b) we're imparting a… Continue
I generally don't do this on IowaAvenue, but this time I'm making a minor exception, for humor's sake: I'm republishing a story I just posted on Almost Fit this morning, only because I'm hoping that it will give you a larf for your Monday back to work blues.
From this mornin… Continue
I ran across this site tonight (literally Stumbled, using StumbleUpon) where it talks about "Catabolic" foods - or foods that require more energy to metabolize then they contain. Somehow I'm not believing this to be true, but I can't quite figure out why, other than that tingling "spidey-sense" of false promises...
Here's the site: http://www.drkaslow.com/html/catabolic_foods.html
So my question is for our Resident Dietitian(s): Is this based in any real science at all? Do we actually k… Continue
I posted a new article on Almost Fit today that includes a few resources on identifying what "Real Food" is these days. It can be quite confusing with all of the bait-and-switch labeling that goes on particularly with large industrial food producers, so I'm sharing the resources… Continue
I posted the second part in the series, "Retrain Yourself on Food Portion Sizes" last night on Almost Fit (technically this morning) at around 1:30AM or so - its been a long week. My time has been stretched thinner than usual, particularly since we have a 3-1/2 year-old (pictured) with Chickenpox at home (I work at home). He's had his first inoculation (at 1 yr.), so his symptoms were reasonably minor - no… Continue

[OK OK...that was a really cheap trick, a "Cosmo"-style headline, but I'm in that kind of mood right now. :)]
Today's recipe over on AlmostFit is for Rose and Cardimom Las… Continue
This morning i posted a new, exceptionally important article on AlmostFit on a remarkable diet discovery that has been made as a direct result of global warming. I think if there's one article that you read on Almost Fit this week, its this one.
Here's an excerpt:
In a press release issued by the… Continue
This is a recent photo of my daughter, Rima, which I used in this morning's post on AlmostFit (18 perfect excuses to avoid buying good food). She just turned one, and even if you can't tell from this shot, she LOVES cupcakes. However, it turns out that she needs to be eating a few more of them.
I've written a new entry on AlmostFit today on, of all things, the baguette - as usual, it started out as an article on something else and morphed into what was posted today, but I have to say I'm really excited about a few things that I'
I posted a new article on AlmostFit last night discussing how advertising that targets children affected me first hand. Its a sensitive subject to some, particularly because it raises questions of free speech and the free market economy. It's not a political article (at least that's my opinion), but it does touch on legislation
AlmostFit is a relatively new project for me, but it seems to be doing really well thanks to places like this one on the Web. I was particularly excited because I got an email from Guy Kawasaki today letting me know that AlmostFit has been accepted to the list of sites on his new venture, Alltop. AlmostFit
