HOW MANY MPH IS YOUR RMR AND WHAT DOES YOUR BMR HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT?

Did the title confuse you? Well don’t let these anagrams confuse you because these will play a powerful part in your fat blasting mission; you can also prove to your friends that you do know more than about fat loss that a McD’s burger has calories! (ok not funny!)

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

This is basically your metabolic rate when you are resting, err that’s why they called it the Resting Metabolic Rate, gosh they are so smart, I bet they lost lots of sleep coming up with that one!

READ THIS OUT ALOUD: “More lean muscle mass will increase your RMR.”

You will hear people say, “Cardio workouts burn more calories than strength training workouts!”

And they are right, it does burn more calories.

BUT and BUTT!

Strength training workouts don’t stop burning calories when you stop working out; yes that’s right folks! Your body can continue burning calories for up to 48 hours after your workout, so put that on your treadmill and run for the hills were they pink bunnies play! (yep I’ve had too much coffee this morning!)

A cardio workout will burn calories only when you are having the cardio workout, but when you are not having the cardio workout then you’re not having the workout that you were having…… err ……ok I’m confused!

So when you stop your cardio workout you stop burning calories!

This amazing (up to) 48 hours of calorie burning from strength training is known as the ‘after-burn’ effect.

Getting back to the topic of RMR; when you build up lean muscle mass this will increase your RMR. Yes you have guessed it; It will cause your metabolic rate when your resting to increase and you’ll burn more calories, aren’t you clever, give yourself a gold star!

Baseline Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Don’t confuse this with RMR, because it’s not RMR it’s BMR, you see there’s a B in the place of the R that’s in RMR so if it’s different then it’s not the same as RMR is it?

:-) LOL

This is the amount of calories that your body needs to perform bodily functions; heartbeat, breathing, body temperature and digesting that dough nut that you just ate!

HOW TO WORKOUT YOUR RMR AND BMR?

Now I was going to give you the formula to work out your RMR and BMR but I’d only confuse myself, so here is a simple online calculator that will do all that formula stuff that you said that you’d never use;

Now you know about the RMR and BMR and if you have used this calculator you will find that it will also give you some tips on what activity levels you should be aiming for.

You will also be able to check this against your current caloric intake and adjust accordingly.
