It's Complicated
About Me:
Hi! I'm a mostly single person who has some kids and some grandkids. Kids like it at my house and so I always have kids underfoot. Even though I keep thinking I'm sick and tired of kids, it seems if I get a chance to get one for the day I jump at it. Go figure! Other than that I enjoy sewing, reading, gardening and fixing up my house. I also love being on the computer and now have more blogs than I can believe!

What are your goals?
My goals are simple. I want to be healthy and happy and enjoy my kids and grandkids when I'm not working. I want to avoid adult onset diabetes and keep my blood pressure at a normal rate. So far, so good.
Favorite Music:
I like rock, alternative rock, some country, classical, smooth jazz, jazz and some r & b. I don't really care for rap in general but there are a few songs I tolerate and a few I even like. My current favorite band is Three Doors Down, but I also love the Rod Stewart "Great American Hits" series. I'm all over the place on music, I guess.
Favorite TV Shows:
I seldom watch television. If I do have a minute to watch it, I like things like "What Not to Wear" and "Little People, Big World" and the one with the sextuplets. I can't remember the name of that one. I like watching old movies or comedies if they are on and I love Colombo. I also love mindless comedies that don't require me to use my brain, like "Everybody Loves Raymond" or "Two and a Half Men".
What is your current exercise routine?
I do a stretch routine daily.
I have a couple of weight routines that I do almost daily.
I have six exercises from a magazine that combine weights with pilates. I used to do them daily. Right now I'm doing them about three times a week until I build back up some strength and figure out my knee problem. One of them I can sometimes only do one time a week because it requires bending at the knee.
At my two work locations I walk to and from my car. At both places, "to the building" is downhill and "from the building" is uphill. At the I-5 location it is probably about a half a mile total. At the Fife location it is one mile total. I'm going to change directions at I-5 to make the total walk closer to a mile. I am trying to remember my pedometer when I go to work so I can measure it.
I ride my exercise bicycle every time I pass it for as long as my knee allows. I hope to be up to a mile within the next week or two. Once I get to where I can stay on it for sustained periods, I plan to ride much longer.
I may or may not be able to do jumping jacks on the trampoline. I have to wait for the weather to find out if I can jump.
I do some resistance routines that my physical therapist recommended with rubber tubing.
What diets have you tried?
I've never gone on a "real" diet. I have always managed my weight through portion control and choosing healthier foods, less fat and more veggies. I eat more vegetables than meat most of the time. I'm trying to increase my protein right now in order to help build muscle. My strength has declined over the last few years. I eat a bowl of oatmeal every morning except Saturday. I have added flax seed, pine nuts, blueberries and a non-salted nut mix (walnuts, almonds and pecans) to my daily diet.
What things do you want to do before you die?
I have thought about this question many times but really I have no answers. I'm fairly happy with my life. There are things I've always wanted to see and do and some of them I still think about, but I'm happy just spending time with the people who are important to me in my life. If I get to do some of those other things it would be serendipity. If i get to a place where I can take that kind of vacation, I would love to do some archaelogical digging at one of the dinosaur sites.
What is your favorite book?
For the longest time my favorite book was "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles. My second favorite book is "A Life in Letters, John Steinbeck". I love anything by John Steinbeck.
The monthly blogging theme for May is "Voices".
My site is Fire and Ice.

Wordless Wednesday Walkers

Today I walked around the yard to assess just what things I want to attack while on vacation. I was happy with the progress the weed killer is making on the blackberries and Japanese knotwood. It's looking like I might be able to kill it off with the brush killer. Yay! I took a lot of pictures and I can't figure out how to make them small on this forum, so I'm posting them on my Wordless Wednesday at my World of Words blog. I didn't take a long w… Continue

Wordless Wednesday Walkers

This walk was actually Monday, but I was too busy today to walk. Trust me...the exercise I've been getting the last few days in my yard is way more than a walk. I've been using a pick axe, a shovel, a rake, a wheelbarrow and a weedeater. I've been moving rocks (some as big as a foot or more), bricks, and junk stuff that I'm finding out there. (My brother threw a lot of the stuff he "got rid of" back in the back area of the yard, including the entire wall-to-wall carpeting that used to be in my l… Continue

Yummy pancakes

I was really hungry for pancakes yesterday morning and I was thinking what I could do to make them a little healthier. I have yet to try the sweet potatoe recipe that someone submitted here because I keep forgetting. I've tried the whole wheat pancake mix and I really don't like it. I love pancakes and I do sometimes make them from scratch, but a lot of the time I just buy the cheap mix and "doctor" it up. I almost always add cheese to the batter and usually a fruit, too. I love pineapple pancak… Continue

Just a little update.

My life has been a whirlwind of activity lately and I feel as if I just need time to slow down and stop for awhile. It makes me realize, however, that the only one who can make time for me is me. I'm working on a time management schedule to help me with my projects and kee… Continue

Meme from Ask the Dietician

What was I doing ten years ago? Ten years ago was 1998. I was working as the Program Supervisor in a daycare for teen moms in an alternative school. I still had five boys at home. We went to Disneyland that year during spring vacation and it was great fun! Five things on my to-do list for today: Laundry. (Yay! In my new washer and dryer!) Sort more computer stuff. (I'm actually getting rid of ALL of my computer stuff except for a few pieces I'm keeping to fix a friend's computer. It's a GIAN… Continue

It's funny how the word classic is generational. For my father, the black and white WW2 movies were classics, Bogart, Maltese Falcon, etc, but my classics are different and my children don't even know their classics yet. Although, the Yours, Mine, and Ours you had on your list is the same one I love, and I introduced it to my kids years ago.

When the new one came out a few years ago, they thought it was awful. LOL...........I have them trained well. White Christmas, with Bing Crosby, is also on their list of must see movies.

LOL............Thanks for the smile about the middle school students. And your movie list was great. Many of those would be on my list, too.

I've also studies lucid dreaming. It's cool stuff. I took a sleep lap in college. the grad student didn't have his act together so we got an A for doing nothing. I guess you could say we slept through the semester and still had a high GPA. I'm able to transform a bad dream while I'm having it into a good one. I teach my kids how to have power over their dreams, select the ones they like, and more importantly, select good realities in their waking life. I hope I addresssed all the great points you brought up in you comment. take care

Hi, Sheila. I love your humor in your comments. I can tell you are funny. I do standup sometimes, but I think I do better in print. In any event, thanks again. What time is over there? It's 11 am in Israel. you must be up early. Have a great day, ben

You are so right about there being a fine line between being helpful to our children and being overbearing. I can remember my mother telling me of her big mistakes in hoping that I would not repeat them - ha ha - I not only repeated them but usually one upped her.

I am trying hard to be of assistance to my daughter - she needs that without criticism. Hopefully I will succeed at this.
